Adults with disabilities live on a very modest monthly stipend. Most say it is inadequate to cover basic needs. An adult with I/DD in St. Louis will receive an average of $733 a month via Social Security Disability. Rent for an average one-bedroom apartment would consume 94% of that monthly income or $689, leaving $44 for food, clothing, medicine, etc. (source: tacinc.org). Rainbow Village is a nonprofit that keeps rents low through fundraising, allowing residents to live in safe, affordable, neighborhood homes, and providing all maintenance.
